GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A Grand Island man has pleaded not guilty in connection with a 2023 hit and run accident in which the Hall County Public Defender was injured.

Raymond Vang, 86, is charged with felony failure to stop and render aid at an injury accident. He pleaded not guilty in writing Monday in Hall County District Court. A trial date is pending.

Grand Island Police said Hall County Public Defender Jerry Piccolo was struck in a crosswalk near the Hall County Courthouse on Aug. 2, 2023. The accident happened when the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup reportedly ran a stop sign. Police said there were no drugs or alcohol involved.

A spokesperson said Piccolo was treated at CHI St. Francis hospital and then transferred to a Lincoln hospital. He has since recovered from his injuries.

A related charge of failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian against Vang was dropped in previous court proceedings.

If convicted on the felony charge, Vang could get up to three years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

A spokesperson for Bryan West said the victim is in good condition.
