'She didn't go far at all': 9-1-1 call sheds light on moments following Wythe County 3-year-old's disappearance

In a 9-1-1 call obtained by WDBJ7, Adrian Puckett reports the disappearance of 3-year-old Josie Burleson, the daughter of Puckett's girlfriend, Kimberly Moore.

In the call, you hear Puckett frantically explain where the child was last seen, noting their proximity to the New River.

The following is a partial transcript of the call:

Dispatcher: "9-1-1, what is your emergency?"

Puckett: "[inaudible] Barren Springs, Virginia. Missing child."

Dispatcher: "Where did the child go?

Puckett: "Man, we're down here near the trail...and she didn't go far at all, man. I mean, she walked to the end of the driveway and gone."

Dispatcher: "Did the child run off, or what happened?"

Puckett: "Alright, we're on the trail [inaudible]...She'd been playing down here at this spring box. Went over to the spring box, didn't see her in it. You know, not in the spring box, whatever. 'Cause she's on the trail, it's a flat even driveway-looking kind of trail. Runnin' down through there... and we're close to the river, too man. *grunts* I've been running like a jack looking for her."

Just hours later, rescue units found the girl's body in the river.

Investigators say initial autopsy reports show the child had water in her lungs and sinuses - signs that indicate drowning was the cause of death.

Both Puckett and Moore continue to be held without bond, facing charges of child endangerment and neglect, with reckless disregard for life.

Deputies say both were using methamphetamines around the time the child went missing.

Both Moore and Puckett were still too inebriated to appear in court on the day of their arrest, authorities said.

Both have since been arraigned over the past two days and assigned court-appointed public defenders.

Memorial services for Josie will be held Saturday at noon at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
