Authorities on Friday publicly identified an Alabama man who was killed this week in a fiery motorcycle crash in eastern San Diego County.

The crash happened as Jeremy Michael Ponton, 34, was riding a 2005 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R headed south on Winter Gardens Boulevard in Lakeside at a high rate of speed shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office and California Highway Patrol.

At the same time, a 2013 Ford F-150 backed out of a driveway north of Lemon Crest Drive into Ponton’s path, authorities said.

The resulting collision set the motorcycle and the pickup truck ablaze, CHP spokesperson Officer Jared Grieshaber said.

Paramedics took Ponton to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, where he died.

The driver of the Ford and a passenger in his vehicle suffered no injuries in the wreck, Grieshaber said.
