A Jacksonville man, charged in the 2020 stabbing death of Randy P. Davenport, was convicted Wednesday, April 24, by a Cherokee County jury.

Brandon Matthew Branton’s trial, which began Monday, April 15, was presided over by the Honorable R. Chris Day in the 2nd Judicial District Court. Following eight days of testimony and deliberation, a guilty verdict was returned.

Branton and another man, who offered Davenport a ride, stopped the vehicle at the corner of County Roads 3906 and 3901 and stabbed Davenport, according to a Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office report.

Branton was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

District Attorney Elmer Beckworth and Assistant DA Jonathan Richey prosecuted this case.

Steven Green and John Scott of Athens served as defense counsel.

The district attorney’s office extended thanks to Sheriff Brent Dickson and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department, Texas Ranger Nic Castle and the Jacksonville Police Department for their investigative efforts.

The case against Branton’s co-defendant is still pending.
