The Avondale Aquatic Center is finally set to open.

The addition of an aquatic center had been on the city's radar for years, Corey Larriva, the city's assistant director of parks and recreation, previously told The Arizona Republic.

While the aquatic center is set to open Memorial Day weekend, a dedication ceremony will be Saturday, April 20, along with a Wave Fest. The event is free and will be from 12:30 to 5 p.m. and open to Avondale residents only. The aquatic center is located at 11275 W. Civic Center Drive.

Residents will have the opportunity to use the aquatic center's amenities, including the water slides and lazy river. Other amenities include a competition pool with a 10-lane, 25-yard course and a recreational pool with a zero-depth entry kiddie play pool, water volleyball and water basketball. The Avondale Aquatic Center also has diving boards and an outdoor seating area with shade canopies.

The Avondale Aquatic Center was constructed by CORE Construction and designed by Gabor Lorant Architects. It cost the city $29 million to build.

Because space for the event is limited, residents are required to register in advance. Residents can register to attend at www.avondaleaz.gov/pool.
