CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland Assistant Director of Public Safety Jakimah Dye was fired Friday, a city spokesperson confirmed.

Dye was facing criticism after crashing her city car with four children in it after leaving a basketball game in February, days before a similar issue led to the resignation of then-Safety Director Karrie Howard.

The city vehicle, a Ford Taurus, had to be towed from the scene in Warrensville Heights.

In her initial report, Dye did not disclose that children were in the vehicle. She said she did not know she was violating city protocol.

“I was not aware of the policy regarding children in the car, but the fact remains, there were children in the car,” Dye wrote in an email to Cleveland officials. “The policy is clear. No children or non-city workers are allowed in the vehicles, I now know this to be true and am disappointed in myself for not being familiar with policy(ies) as a whole.”

Dye’s driving privileges with the city were suspended following the crash, a city spokesperson said.

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to the city for more information, including a termination letter. Dye could not immediately be reached on Saturday afternoon.
