Chad Daybell gives 'patriarchal blessing' for Lori Vallow's brother, Alex Cox

Chad Daybell recorded what's called a patriarchal blessing for Alex Cox, Lori Vallow's brother, in November, 2019, less than three weeks before Cox died.

BOISE, Idaho — Aliases, evil spirits and a 'patriarchal blessing' were the focus of Chad Daybell's capital murder trial Tuesday, as a jury heard testimonies for the fourth day.

Chandler, Arizona police officer Nathan Duncan was questioned on the stand for several hours, specifically about his role in overseeing the investigation into Charles Vallow's death. Charles was shot and killed by Lori's brother, Alex Cox, in July 2019 in what he claimed to be self-defense. Cox died on December 12, 2019, from natural causes, according to the coroner's report.

In Duncan's testimony, he also spoke of a blessing given unto Cox by Daybell one week prior to his death. The blessing, called a "patriarchal blessing" within the church of Latter-day Saints, is traditionally delivered to LDS members by ordained patriarchs of the church.

An audio recording was played in court Tuesday of the full patriarchal blessing Chad Daybell gave to Alex Cox in November 2019. He is believed to have had some affiliation with the case and/or the initial disappearance of JJ and Tylee.

"You were selected by savior himself to be part of the fourth creation. great warriors were needed in that creation. Powerful goddesses needed to be protected and you were selected to help protect your sister and you helped her in numerous probations as a defender. You have a special bond even from premortal world," Daybell said in his patriarchal blessing. "You help us, already assisted us in ways that could never be repaid. You will continue to do so as you move forward in this life."

In conclusion of the blessing, Daybell said to Cox, "I close this feature of the blessing by assuring you that you will rise to an eternal glory and that you will have an eternal family; and that your exaltation is assured through your faithfulness. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen."

Chad Daybell is accused of murdering and conspiring to murder his first wife, Tammy Daybell, and two of his current wife, Lori Vallow Daybell's children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan. Prosecutors have stated if he's convicted, they will seek the death penalty.

The trial will resume Wednesday morning.
