‘Welcome to Medicare’ workshop planned
The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem will have a free “Welcome to Medicare” workshop for individuals turning 65 and those who already have Medicare to learn about the different insurance options available, including “Original Medicare,” Medicare prescription drug programs, Medicare supplements and Medicare Advantage plans.
The session will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Monday at the Central Library, 660 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem.

The session is designed to explain and clarify the Medicare signup process and educate attendees on how to make smart choices. Space is limited and reservations are required.

Retirement workshop set
The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem is offering a retirement workshop called Retirement Reimagined in May.
The workshop is for people who are retired or considering retirement and focuses on the practical, social, emotional and spiritual issues that retirement brings with it.
The workshops will be 4:30-6:30 p.m. on May 15, 22 and 29 at the Shepherd’s Center, 1700 Ebert St., Winston-Salem. Participants should commit to attending all sessions.
The cost is $35 and covers course materials and refreshments.
The workshop leaders will be Pamela Karr, certified professional retirement coach, and Molly Lineberger, a nationally certified counselor.
Registration is required, and the workshop is limited to 16 people.

Shepherd’s Center to hold annual book sale
The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem will hold its 37th annual used book sale from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 2-3, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4 in the Education Building at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds.
Items will be half price on May 4. The entrance for parking is through Gate 5 off Deacon Boulevard.
Admission and parking are free.
Thousands of used books and other items will be available.
Proceeds of the sale benefit the organization’s programs and services for older adults in the local community.

Free ‘Medicare 101’ seminars scheduled
McCall Insurance Services will hold free in-person and online “Medicare 101” seminars at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday. The seminars explain Medicare’s programs and are for anyone turning 65 or on Medicare.
Topics include the basics of Medicare, such as signing up for Medicare Parts A and Part B. The sessions will also explain Part C and Part D.
The seminar is for information only, and no solicitations will be made.

Friends of the Central Library to hold sale
The Friends of the Central Library will hold its annual Spring Book Sale May 16-19 at the library, 660 W. Fifth St. Admission is free.
The hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 17, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. May 18 and 1-4 p.m. May 19. On June 5 items will be half price or $5 per bag; some exclusions apply.
A special preview sale will be from noon to 3 p.m. May 16. Preview sale attendees must pre-register. Email FriendsofCentralLibrary@gmail.com for information. A $25 entry fee will be charged on May 16.
The sale will include books, DVDs, CDs and other media in good condition. There is also a large selection of graphic novels, and parent-teacher resources.

Caregiver support group meetings set
The Alzheimer’s Association offers a Caregiver Support Group at 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem (upper level), 1700 Ebert St., Winston-Salem.
A trained facilitator provides a safe place for caregivers of people living with dementia to develop a support system, explore ways of coping, and learn about resources.

SECU Family House needs volunteers
The SECU Family House needs groups and volunteers to provide meals for Family House guests.
These dinners provide much-needed support to adult patients and their caregivers who are away from home for medical care. Food may be prepared in the Family House kitchen or prepared off-site and dropped off. Having the meals at the house allows the families to avoid going to restaurants or grocery stores.

The RSVP AmeriCorps Seniors (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) is looking for volunteers aged 55 and older, in-person and online.
Volunteer opportunities:
In-person Reading Buddies: (In-school setting) Petree Elementary School, second grade, from 10:45-11:45 a.m. (After-school setting) Latino Community Services, 3:15-4:30 p.m.
Virtual (online setting): Reading Buddies, must have strong computer skills and be familiar with Zoom. Slots available in the morning and/or afternoon. In the morning, read to pre-K students from 10:30-10:45. In the afternoon, read with students in the first through third grades from 3:30-4:30.
Food Pantry Assistants: Assist with packing food boxes and distributing them to clients from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Mondays and/or Fridays.
Food Pantry Clerical Assistants: Must have strong computer skills to input client data. Volunteers are needed for three hours on Mondays and/or Fridays, noon to 3 p.m.
Drivers are needed to transport clients to medical appointments for partner agencies in Winston-Salem and Kernersville.
Mailing Support: Fold, stuff, seal, label, stamp and send bulk mailing letters.

Hospice agency needs volunteers
Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care needs volunteers to help deliver compassionate care to patients at the end of life. Mountain Valley serves 18 counties in North Carolina and Virginia.
Volunteers are needed for such activities as reading or singing to patients, caregiver respite care, running errands, being a good listener and emotional support.
There also is a need for licensed or certified volunteers to provide such specialized services as art, massage, music and pet therapies. Hairdressers and notaries also are needed.
Most volunteers must complete a training program, pass a background check and meet other requirements, depending on their volunteer role.

Samaritan Ministries needs volunteers
Samaritan Ministries needs volunteers to help with meal preparation and serving meals in the dining room.
The lunch shift is 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The Sunday lunch shift is 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The dinner shift is from 4-7:30 p.m. each day.
Students who are 13 years of age and older can volunteer in the soup kitchen during lunch with a registered adult. Dinnertime volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
Samaritan Ministries also needs volunteers for its Store Rescue program. The hours are 9-11 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Store Rescue volunteers help pick up donations from local grocery stores and transport them to Samaritan. Volunteers must commit to one pickup day per week.
