E. Jean Carroll appeared overjoyed Wednesday when she was named to this list. Much unlike how former President Donald Trump probably felt when he was given the distinction back in 2021.
Both have been named Time’s Most Influential People of the Year.
“THANK you @TIME for the STAGGERINGLY GREAT honor of being named to the TIME100 --- the 100 Most Influential People of 2024. This is a tribute to every survivor in the country!” Carroll posted to X, formerly Twitter.
“The triumph of E. Jean Carroll starts with her disclosures—here was this woman from the self-described “silent generation” ripping off the gag. She embodied what #MeToo was actually about: not a woman taking down a powerful man, but a woman freeing herself. And in E. Jean’s case, it just so happens, freeing millions more alongside her,” wrote Tarana Burke, founder of the MeToo movement, in the writeup for Carroll.
Back in 2021, Trump was added to the list. But for very different reasons.
“Trump’s assault on the Justice Department, his extortion of foreign allies, his obsession with domestic enemies all rhyme with Nixonian villainy and go further,” wrote Nancy Gibbs, in part, at the time. Trump celebrates participants in the Jan. 6 insurrection as patriots and runs to get another can of gasoline. Although he has left office, he remains a magnetic force, propelling others who have taken up his antidemocratic mantle and challenged the validity of our elections.”
Though, Carroll, Trump was named Time’s Person of the Year in 2016.
In January, a jury awarded $83.3 million to Carroll in a stinging and expensive rebuke to Trump for his continued social media attacks against the longtime advice columnist over her claims that he sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan department store.
The award, coupled with a $5 million sexual assault and defamation verdict last year from another jury in a case brought by Carroll, raised to $88.3 million what Trump must pay her. Protesting vigorously, he has appealed.
