An Idaho sheriff's deputy is dead after being shot while conducting a traffic stop.

Police said Deputy Tobin Bolter, 27, was shot as he approached the driver's window at about 9 p.m. Saturday in Boise. A citizen witnessed the shooting, called 911 and performed CPR. Bolter was transported to Saint Alphonsus where he later died.

Following the shooting, Boise Police Officers located the unoccupied suspect vehicle and a search for the suspect ensued.

The person believed to be the shooting suspect was found outside a home on South Jackson Street. Boise Police Special Operations Unit members responded and attempted to take the person into custody, but he was uncooperative.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, the suspect fired a weapon at officers. A BPD officer then fired his weapon at the suspect, hitting him. The suspect was given medical aid and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

At an emotional news conference shortly after Bolter passed away at the hospital, Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford thanked the paramedics and the citizen who stopped to help the deputy.

I think it goes to show what kind of community we live in where there are evil people that will do evil things but there are good people that help us and come to our aid,” he said.

Bolter was an officer for seven years. He had been with the Ada County Sheriff's Office since January and had served with the Meridian Police Department and Pleasant Hill Police Department.

While on their way to assist the downed deputy, another Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in a two-vehicle crash with a power pole. The deputy was taken to Saint Alphonsus in Boise and their condition is stable at this time.
