DENVER (KDVR) — Denver and the Front Range were in store for dangerously high winds Saturday, with gusts of up to 100 mph possible in areas of the foothills and gusts of up to 75 mph possible in Denver.

This has led to several weather advisories being put into place and a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day being issued.

Some rain or snow was also possible in Denver on Saturday. Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Liz McGiffin said the worst of the storm could be after the sun goes down Saturday.

Wind concerns for Saturday afternoon, evening

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for Saturday that will last until noon on Sunday.

The strongest winds, according to the NWS, will happen Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Greg Perez said the Denver metro area could see wind gusts anywhere from 70 to 80 mph Saturday afternoon.

Because of this, travel is not advised on Saturday and Sunday due to the high winds causing possibly dangerous driving conditions in many areas.

Impacts from the wind

Power outages are possible from the wind, according to Xcel Energy. People can check where outages are happening and the status of an outage on Xcel’s website.

Xcel said that preemptive shutoffs would occur for around 55,000 customers starting Saturday at 3 p.m.

It said these shutoffs are a last-resort measure to reduce the risk of wildfires and would last until at least noon on Sunday.

Fire danger was also higher than usual. Several departments have sent out warnings ahead of the weekend and a red flag warning has been issued for certain parts of the state.

Property damage is possible as the high winds could blow unsecured items such as lawn furniture around.

The public is advised to secure these items to reduce potential harm.

Blowing dust is also a possibility in certain areas, and the NWS said it could reduce visibility to less than a quarter mile in some places. Blowing snow is possible in parts of the high country as well, according to Perez.

Air travel could also be negatively impacted by the wind. Perez advises people with pending flights on Saturday to stay aware of potential delays and cancellations.
