WHERE HE LATER DIED. NEW AT NOON, TWO FOUR CITY POLICE OFFICERS AND A RUTHERFORD COUNTY DEPUTY WERE INJURED AFTER A MAN LED THEM ON A CHASE. OFFICIALS SAY ON APRIL 20TH, DIEGO SALGADO CAME THROUGH A CHECKPOINT AND OFFICERS NOTICED NARCOTICS INSIDE OF THE CAR. OFFICERS TRIED TO GET SALGADO OUT OF THE VEHICLE. HE THEN RESISTED AND SPED OFF, INJURING TWO POLICE OFFICERS. DEPUTIES CHASED SALGADO FOR NEARLY FIVE MILES UNTIL HE LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED INTO A DITCH AND RAN. THEN, AFTER A SHORT CHASE AND A STRUGGLE, SALGADO WAS ARRESTED. THE INJURED OFFICERS AND DEPUTY FROM THIS INCIDENT HAVE ALL BEEN TREATED AND RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL. A traffic checkpoint became the start of a North Carolina man's getaway attempt that left three law enforcement officers with injuries, deputies said Monday.According to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Road, the series of incidents started with the checkpoint set up by the Forest City Police Department in the area of Forest Hunt Drive.Deputies said driver Diego Salgado came through the checkpoint, and officers noticed narcotics "in plain view, inside the car."Officers attempted to get Salgado out of the vehicle, but he resisted and sped off, injuring two Forest City Police Officers, according to deputies. They said one officer suffered a broken hand and the other officer sustained bruising on the elbow.At this point, officials said deputies pursued the vehicle more than four miles miles before Salgado lost control and crashed into a ditch, then ran off. Deputies said they caught up with Salgado, after a short foot pursuit and struggle, and were able to take him into custody. During the struggle, a deputy suffered a dislocation and laceration of his finger, officials said.They said further investigation led to the discovery of 1.2 grams of cocaine, 39.69 grams of marijuana resin, 44.22 grams of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia in Salgado's vehicle.Forest City police recovered 23.22 grams of methamphetamine and 22.36 grams of cocaine from Salgado's vehicle before he drove off from the checkpoint, officials said. The North Carolina Highway Patrol also responded to the scene of the crash and cited Salgado for driving under the influence, deputies said.They said the injured officers were all treated and released from Rutherford Regional Hospital. Salgado also was injured in the crash and was treated at a hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina.Salgado was released and taken into custody by South Carolina law enforcement where he is currently incarcerated awaiting extradition back to North Carolina on a long list of charges, including driving while intoxicated, felony flee/elude arrest in a motor vehicle, felony assault physically injure law enforcement officer, two counts of assault on a public officer, as well as seven drug charges.
