SPRINGFIELD, Il. — Gov. J.B. Pritzker called for an “evolution of the leadership” at the CTA, as embattled agency President Dorval Carter has looked to Springfield for solutions to a looming budget crisis.

Carter has found himself in the hot seat as the CTA struggled in recent years to provide frequent, reliable and safe service. At the same time, the Illinois General Assembly is weighing a sweeping set of recommendations about what Chicago-area transit could look like in the future, including whether the CTA should be consolidated with Metra and Pace into one agency and how to address a transit fiscal cliff expected when federal pandemic aid runs out.

The IOC has suspended former Olympic power broker Sheikh Ahmad of Kuwait for 15 years after his conviction for forgery was upheld on appeal this year at a Swiss criminal appeals court. His sanction for “a betrayal of his IOC Member’s oath, as well as the seriousness of the damage to the IOC’s reputation” was approved by the Olympic body’s executive board. The ruling has been seen by The Associated Press. The sheikh will be 74 when the IOC ban expires. He was a longtime ally of current IOC president Thomas Bach. Sheikh Ahmad was convicted in Geneva in 2021 of forgery in a case relating to Kuwaiti domestic politics.

A Chinese truck driver has been praised in local media for parking his vehicle across a highway and preventing more cars from tumbling down a slope after a section of the road in the country’s mountainous south collapsed and killed at least 48 people. Wang Xiangnan was driving Wednesday along the highway in Guangdong province, a vital economic hub in southern China. At around 2 a.m., Wang saw several vehicles moving in the opposite direction of the four-lane highway and a fellow driver soon informed him about the collapse. Reacting swiftly, Wang, a former soldier, positioned his truck to block the highway, effectively stopping dozens of vehicles from advancing into danger.

The forecast for Churchill Downs in Louisville calls for a 60% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Both Fierceness and Sierra Leone have won on messy tracks before, and so have four others in the 20-horse field. For the second straight year, Japan has two entries that will be looking to deliver the country's first derby win.

Tocchet says they know the next series will be tough. His Canucks advanced by downing Nashville 1-0 in Game 6. Tocchet took the Canucks from a team that missed the postseason a year ago finishing 11th in the Western Conference to third in the West this season. They won the Pacific Division with 109 points, winning all four games with Edmonton.

Drone footage obtained by The Associated Press shows the devastation inflicted on the Ukranian village of Ocheretyne. It has been a target for Russian forces as they continue to advance in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine's military has acknowledged that the Russians have gained a “foothold” in Ocheretyne — which had a pre-war population of about 3,000 — but says that fighting continues. No building in Ocheretyne appeared to have been left untouched by the fighting. Most houses, apartment blocks and other buildings look damaged beyond repair, and many houses have been pummeled into piles of wood and bricks.

South Sudan has removed recently imposed taxes and fees that had triggered the suspension of U.N. food airdrops. The United Nations had earlier this week urged South Sudanese authorities to remove the new taxes, introduced in February. Thousands of people in the country depend on aid from the outside. However, the government on Friday said it was keeping charges on services rendered by firms contracted by the U.N peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. The United Nations had warned that suspending food aid deliveries would affect 135,000 people by May. The new taxes had applied to charges for electronic cargo tracking, security escort fees and fuel.
