They’re spread out across the state at various colleges now, but several former local track and field standouts reconvened in Charlottesville last weekend for the prestigious Virginia Challenge, with several strong results.
James Madison sophomore Gracen King (Massaponax) tied for second in the women’s high jump (5-4.5), while Richmond junior Virginia Beringer (James Monroe) was sixth in the women’s 400 in a personal-best 55.12 seconds.
In the men’s meet, Norfolk State senior Isaiah Haywood (Louisa) finished seventh in the men’s triple jump (49-5) and ninth in the triple jump (23-2.5), and VCU freshman Jaiden Oglesby (Colonial Forge) was seventh in the men’s high jump (6-7).

- Lock Haven freshman Kwame Whitaker (Courtland) won the men’s long jump (23-8) at Saturday’s Bucknell Team Invitational, the No. 5 leap in school history.
- Arkansas junior Aaliyah Pyatt (Massaponax) finished fifth in the women’s 400 meters (52.63) at Saturday’s John McDonell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

Hillsdale (Ohio) junior Kayla Loescher (Colonial Forge) finished second in the women’s 1,500 meters (5:03.21) at Saturday’s Hillsdale Outdoor Opener.
VMI senior Isaiah Blount (Caroline) was named Southern Conference male track athlete of the week after winning the decathlon at the recent Southside Power and Fitness Invitational in Hickory, N.C. with the No. 2 score (6,832 points) in school history. He won seven of the 10 events.

Junior outfielder Elijah Lambros (Fredericksburg Christian) hit his fifth home run of the year in Maryland’s 11-2 win over Nebraska Saturday.
- Senior designated hitter Aiden Tierney (Colonial Forge) hit a tiebreaking two-run double in Mount St. Mary’s 6-3 win over Fairfield Friday.
- Junior Trevor Smith (Colonial Beach) had a two-run homer and a three-run double in St. Mary’s (Md.)’s 8-0 win over Penn College Friday, then went deep again in Saturday’s 8-3 loss in the rematch.
SOFTBALL
Salem (N.C.) freshman Cassie Miller (Fredericksburg Christian) was named USA South Conference rookie of the week after 8 for 14 with a home run, three doubles and five RBIs in four games. She’s hitting .333 for the year.
- Junior Jayla Hill (Caroline) hit a grand slam in Bowie State’s 12-4 victory over Elizabeth City State Saturday.
- Freshman Mylia Knight (Spotsylvania) hit a three-run homer in Virginia Union’s 7-1 victory over rival Virginia State Saturday.
Sophomore Paige Eagleton (Stafford) went a combined 4 for 8 with two doubles in Shenandoah’s doubleheader sweep of Eastern Mennonite Tuesday.
Senior Caroline Pollock (Mountain View) homered in Christopher Newport’s 8-0 win over York (Pa.) Wednesday.

TENNIS
Fredericksburg native Savannah Williams defeated Keiser’s Yeva Kononovych 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to help Tampa, ranked ninth in Division II, to a 4-3 team victory Thursday. She’s 15-3 on the year at No. 2 and 3 singles.
