ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) reminds Illinois motorists to be mindful of their driving during National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 15-19.

On Tuesday, the IDOT, Illinois State Police and safety partners gathered to advise drivers: Work zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.

“We’re getting into the construction season,” Illinois Tollway deputy chief of traffic and incident management, Steve Mednis says. “We’ve got a lot of safety measures that are in place, but we need the motoring public help us get that message across by also driving safe.”

On average, more than 6,000 crashes occur in Illinois work zones each year. In 2023, IDOT reports a total of 24 people died in work zone crashes, with 23 of the fatalities being motorists or their passengers.

IDOT reminds drivers traveling through work zones to:

  • Drop it and drive. Phones and electronic devices down at all times – it’s the law.
  • Obey the signs. They will help you safely navigate work zones – and sometimes avoid delays.
  • Slow down. The posted speed limits are there for the safety of workers and you.
  • Be on the lookout for slowed or stopped traffic.
  • Consider the limitations of heavy equipment, trucks and commercial vehicles. Provide them extra distance to come to a complete stop if they are behind you.

“Everyone being a willing and equal participant in work zone safety will help everybody have a successful 2024 season,” Mednis says.
