An Iowa City man was arrested Tuesday on charges he stole someone’s banking information and used it to pay more than $50,000 in bills and other purchases over three months.
Obed Ivan Dominguez Lugo, 40, is charged with one count of first-degree theft. According to a criminal complaint, the thefts happened between Oct. 23, 2023 and Jan. 19.
Dominguez Lugo used stolen banking information from multiple victims to pay his own bills and send money through different companies. He stole a total of $52,891.43 from the victims, who are not identified in the complaint.
A warrant was issued for his arrest on April 5, and he was taken into custody Tuesday by Iowa City police. He had his first appearance in court Wednesday and was released from jail on probation.
