ROME — The city of Rome has announced open registration starting next month for the upcoming return of the Summer Day Camp Program, which will run from July 1 to Aug. 23 for children ages 6 to 12, according to city officials.
Open registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15 and will be first come, first served until all 64 program slots are full, officials said.
The summer camp program will be from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Pinti Field on Sixth Street.
“It’s a full blown day camp,” explained Ryan Hickey, deputy director of the Department of Parks and Recreation. “It’s a combination of both structured play and unstructured.”
Each day will feature activities and events for the children at Pinti Field, with possibly three to four field trips being planned for the summer.
The city is in the process of hiring several high school and college-aged students to act as daily chaperones, with a 1:8 ratio of chaperones to children, Hickey stated.
The cost to attend for the summer will be $1,000 for Rome residents and $1,200 for non-residents.
The Summer Day Camp Program was a mainstay in Rome for decades before it was closed for the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Bringing the program back was a major policy priority for Mayor Jeffrey M. Lanigan upon his election.
Registration will begin on May 15 at the Rome Recreation Department Office at City Hall at 198 N. Washington St.
Registration packets for the program are currently available at the office, or online at the city’s website at www.romenewyork.com.
