A soldier found dead on the Fort Meade military base earlier this month was an intelligence analyst from San Antonio, according to Army officials.

On the morning of April 10, Pfc. Paul-Anthony Varner was found unresponsive in his room at Freedom Barracks, where he was soon pronounced dead, according to a news release.

Varner, 25, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, a member of the 704th Military Intelligence Brigade.

Though the Army said there was no immediate indication of self-harm or foul play in Varner’s death, its Criminal Investigation Division is examining evidence.

Fort Meade is the second-largest installation by population with more than 64,000 employees across all five branches of the military.

Less than two weeks after Varner’s death, a civilian employee was also found dead at Fort Meade — this time on Tuesday in his office.

Like Varner, Army officials said there was no sign of foul play or self-harm in the employee’s death. The employee has not been publicly identified pending notification of next of kin.
