Simpson University's baseball team, the Red Hawks, have been breaking multiple records just this season alone. Coach Dan Tating picked up his 100th career win earlier this season. The team also has the best conference record in history, winning 14-7 in conference play this season.

"We’ve now made the conference tournament three out of the last four years. Before that, they’d only made it once in 20 years. So, we’re excited it’s the highest seed we’ve ever had," Tating said.

Coach Tating ties the second-most wins in a season, along with the record for the second longest win streak in program history. The Red Hawks were the number-three seed in the Cal Pac tournament at Hohokam Stadium.

“We’ve beaten everybody in the conference at least once, so we're hoping we can go in and get some wins and head into the opening round of the world series," Tating said.”

Red Hawks player, Logan Gomes has been making an extradentary impact behind the bat. Gomes leads the Red Hawks in hits (47), runs (37), extra base hits (26), home runs (16), with a SLG% (.728).

He set the single season record this year with 16 homeruns and broke his own record of 13 last year. Gomes has had the most home runs in program history, a grand total of 41.

"It's pretty special... just the support and the opportunity to break that record is really just the biggest thing to me. It's just a special moment," Gomes said.

The spectacular batter is a Red Hawk through and through, playing for the team from 2019 to 2024 and earning his bachelors and masters in Education. His goal is to become an academic educator.

Gomes describes this team as a family that is consistently inspiring each other to get better.

"It's like a family this year, we're able to all push each other and we're expecting each other to all get better," Gomes said.

When asked about his success, Gomes owes it all to practice. He tells us he practices hard in the off-season when nobody is watching.

"Everyday is a grind...especially when you're a smaller guy, you've really got to work for what you want," Gomes said.

Multiple other records have also been broken by the Red Hawks this 2024 season. Nathan Palacioz tied the single season and career saves record (8), and Eric Winchester set the career strikeout record at 266 so far.

The team is now heading to the conference tournament next week where they are hoping to advance.
