The Portland Trail Blazers officially have a 13.2% chance of receiving the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA draft after the league held random drawings Monday to break six ties in the league’s overall standings.
The drawings were conducted by NBA President of League Operations Byron Spruell at the NBA office in Secaucus, New Jersey.
The draft lottery will be held on May 12.
The tie closest to the top of the draft involved the Blazers (21-61) and the Charlotte Hornets (21-61). Both tied for the third-worst record in the NBA.
The Hornets won the drawing to receive a 13.3% chance of winning the top pick while the Blazers sit at 13.2%.
Normally, the teams with the worst three records all have a 14% chance to win. That is the percentage held by the Detroit Pistons (14-68) and the Washington Wizards (15-67).
The team with the fourth-worst record would normally hold a 12.5% chance.
Since the Hornets and Blazers tied, the 14% odds for No. 3 and the 12.5% odds for No. 4 were added to get 26.5%. That percentage was then split with No. 3 receiving 13.3% and No. 4 holding 13.2%.
The NBA Draft will be held June 27.
The Sacramento Kings (46-36) won their tiebreaker with the Golden State Warriors (46-36) leaving the latter team with the 14th-best odds at 0.7% while the Kings hold a 0.8%.
This slightly helps the Blazers, who own the Warriors’ pick, which is top-four protected.
The Warriors have a 3.4% chance of leaping into the top four.
Other tiebreakers from the NBA:
- The Philadelphia 76ers (47-35) won a tiebreaker with the Indiana Pacers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Orlando Magic. Second, third, and fourth place in the tiebreaker drawings went to the Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando, and Indiana, respectively.
- The Milwaukee Bucks (49-33) won a tiebreaker with the New Orleans Pelicans and the Phoenix Suns. Second and third place in the tiebreaker drawings went to Phoenix and New Orleans, respectively.
- The Dallas Mavericks (50-32) won a tiebreaker with the New York Knicks.
- The Denver Nuggets (57-25) won a tiebreaker with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
