RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — We are about one month away from the start of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season and a disturbance has caught the eyes of the National Hurricane Center in the far eastern Atlantic.

The area of low pressure is about 900 miles northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and is producing persistent showers and thunderstorms. It is forecast to move southwestward at 10 to 15 miles per hour into an area of stronger upper-level winds tonight and tomorrow.

According to the NHC, additional development is not expected.

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November 30. Development is certainly possible before the start. The National Hurricane Center will start to send out its outlooks on May 15. Special tropical weather outlooks, like the one released on Thursday morning, will be issued as necessary during the remainder of the off-season.

A few weeks ago, Colorado State University forecasters released its hurricane forecast, calling for an ‘extremely’ active season with 23 predicted named storms, 11 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes.
