Bishop Timon-St. Jude senior Jaiden Harrison has been named the Class AA State Player of the Year in boys basketball by the New York State Sportswriters Association as the all-state large school teams were announced Wednesday.
Large schools are made up of programs in classes AAA, AA and A. The small schools all-state teams were announced last week.
Bishop Timon-St. Jude’s Jaiden Harrison got the switch at the top of the key and his defender entered drop coverage. It was the opening he needed for not just a 3-point shot, but a chance at history.
Harrison, a 6-foot-3 guard, is a Arkansas State signee who averaged 20.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 2.1 steals and 1 block per game for the Tigers. He led Bishop Timon to the New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association Class AA championship game and was named the Allen Wilson Buffalo News Player of the Year.
Nichols senior Jakye Rainey was the only other Western New York player named to the first team in Class AA. Rainey averaged 29.7 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Vikings and became the Monsignor Martin’s boys basketball all-time leading scorer with 2,097 points. He is a two-time All-WNY first team and All-Catholic selection. Rainey also surpassed Christian Laettner to become Nichols’ all-time leading scorer.
