KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — An investigation is underway after a deadly shooting at a West Knoxville apartment late Thursday night, according to the Knoxville Police Department.

KPD shared that at 9:30 p.m. on April 25, officers were sent to an apartment at 3210 Atchley Ridge Way in regards to a deceased person. On scene, they found a woman inside an apartment who had been shot multiple times. She was pronounced dead at the scene. She was identified as Nicole Fanney, 49.

Friday morning, the Knoxville Police Department released that Michael Merrick, 49 had been charged with second degree murder. Police said the shooting is believed to have been “domestic in nature.”

According to Knoxville Police, Merrick left the scene before police arrived, but he was taken into custody in Whitley County, Kentucky for driving under the influence Thursday night. Merrick is being held at the Whitley County Detention Center and will be extradited back to Knoxville.
