Green TD Steven Matthews has congratulated Wicklow Educate Together Secondary School on organising and hosting another successful Model United Nations conference.

The event was launched by Secretary General Aidan O'Connor and saw over 200 students from across the country debating current world issues in the model United Nations format. The guest speakers were Deputy Matthews and Labour’s Annie Waithira-Burke, who spoke of the importance of having your voice heard.

Speaking afterwards Deputy Matthews commented: “The students debated and discussed global issues around health, security, environmental and social justice in committees before bringing matters to the delegate countries in the general assembly.

“These students are incredible, they are teaching and learning vitally important skills around debating, negotiating and consensus building. These skills are so important to protect peace and our democratic principles in the face of ever divisive politics and global tensions.

"In my address to the conference I suggested that some of the most important skills are the ability to listen carefully, to be inquisitive, respectful and honest and to always verify your information. The skills and professional approach that I witnessed from the delegates leaves me in no doubt that our future is in good hands but only if us older generation can take the steps necessary on climate, health and environment until they are ready to take the wheel.

“It was fitting that the conference also paid tribute and remembrance to former principal Colm Kehoe, who was a champion for the Model United Nations and who has left a proud and lasting legacy at ETSS Wicklow.”
