St. Cloud moves up in list of best small cities to start a business
A new bar, spa, and even a speakeasy have recently opened their doors in St. Cloud.
The newly opened Cloud 9 Marketplace and Black Squirrel Bookstore on New York Avenue is filled with a variety of items, all featuring local artists and entrepreneurs.
The owner, Joy Rodgers, said she opened up the shop after visiting St. Cloud and connecting to its history.
"I moved to St. Cloud two years ago, and I love the history of St. Cloud because it was actually one of the first settlements for the union soldiers after the Civil War, which I had two relatives in that war, so I came here on a history hunt, and I found this cute little downtown," Rodgers said.
The city just jumped up on Wallet Hub's list of the best small cities to start a business in, securing a spot in the top 45.
The bookstore part of Joy's shop is filled with a variety of novels, all donated by locals.
"I’ll come in the morning, and there will be a box on the front step full of books, and then I load them up on the shelves for the kids and other people. Most of the books are under $5. It’s just to keep them out of the dump and put them into someone else’s hands," Rodgers said.
There's also a third part of her store: a speakeasy.
To get into the speakeasy, visitors have to follow instructions to figure out a code. Once they have the code, they have to find a certain book. Once they open the book, they type in the code, and then they can open the door.
"It’s amazing. We’re super packed on the weekends, Friday and Saturday, all the locals love it. It’s somewhere kind of upscale for them to go, which is very nice for this area," Rodgers said.
Other spots have also recently popped up in St Cloud, including Wellness Hydration Bar & Spa, East Row Market, and Havana Tea.
Several other Central Florida cities also made the list of best small cities to open up shop.
Winter Garden took the 40th spot. Clermont landed at 29. Sanford came in 25th.
Casselberry, Winter Park, and Altamonte Springs all ranked in the top 20.
