Security officers injured after altercation at Rhode Island Hospital

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) –Providence Police said that two security guards were stabbed last night at Rhode Island Hospital.

At around 1:53 a.m., officers responded to the hospital for a report of a physical altercation between two security guards and an individual.

Both security guards sustained injuries from a straight edge razor blade that suspect, 39-year-old Manuel Gouveia, had in his possession. He was turned over to the Rhode Island Detective Bureau for charging.

In a statement, Sr. Public Relations Officer at Lifespan, Jessica Wharton said:

“There was an assault on two security officers last night at Rhode Island Hospital as they were escorting a patient off campus. The hospital’s Providence Police detail was on scene and quickly apprehended the assailant. Thankfully, the officers were not seriously injured, and we thank them for keeping our staff and other patients safe.” 

Gouveia is facing two counts of felony assault and battery, and his bond is set at $50,000.
