Internet casino gambling is legal in only a handful of states, but the industry is convinced it is the future of betting, even as some worry about cannibalizing physical casinos. Speaking Wednesday at gambling industry conference in New Jersey, industry executives acknowledged the difficulty they’ve had in expanding the legalization of online casino games. Yet they remain certain that, like many other industries, the future of gambling is online. That's particularly true as federal post-pandemic budget aid dries up. Internet betting also faces claims from some gambling companies that online betting is cannibalizing revenue from physical casinos, a hotly debated topic in the industry.

Scores of Syrian women and children linked to the Islamic State group have left a sprawling camp in northeast Syria and headed home to the eastern province of Deir el-Zour following mediation by tribal leaders. Wednesday's departures are the latest from al-Hol camp, which houses wives, widows, children and other family members of IS militants. They came as repatriations by foreign countries have increased in recent months in an attempt to reduce the population of the facility that at its peak five years ago housed 73,000 people. The 254 Syrians boarded trucks at al-Hol camp and moved south under the protection of members of U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led fighters.

Micah Leon's journey to the NFL was far from normal. He was a walk-on quarterback at North Carolina State, UConn and Florida. His entire collegiate career spans seven years and includes two mop-up appearances. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 78 yards, barely enough to create a highlight reel. So getting a tryout with the Miami Dolphins during rookie minicamp this weekend was some feat. It's also a testament to what scouts and general managers see when they weigh Leon’s 6-foot-5 frame and clean throwing motion against his thin resume and lack of game experience. His QB coach calls him “a prototype" waiting to be discovered.

Wisconsin Democrats plan to spend $7 million on television ads in five state Senate races they believe are key to regaining control of the chamber. The State Senate Democratic Committee says the buy will target races around Wisconsin, including Milwaukee's northern suburbs, the rural areas north of Madison, the Fox Cities, Green Bay and La Crosse. Republicans currently hold a 22-10 advantage in the chamber, but Democrats hope new district boundaries Gov. Tony Evers signed in February will help them chip away at the GOP advantage. Sixteen Senate seats are up in November, including eight currently held by Republicans. Democrats need to win 13 seats to gain the majority.

The United Nations food agency's deputy executive director says if the monthslong conflict playing out on the Lebanese-Israeli border continues to escalate, the agency won’t be ready for the spike in nutritional needs across crisis-hit Lebanon. The UN World Food Program provides aid to over 158,000 people in Lebanon affected by the hostilities. But the agency does not have the funding to address growing needs “should the situation further escalate and further deteriorate,” Skau told The Associated Press Wednesday. Clashes between the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and Israeli forces began on Oct. 8, a day after Israel started bombarding the Gaza Strip following Hamas’ deadly rampage in southern Israel. The tensions between the two sides continue to intensify.

Pennsylvania election officials say the number of mail-in ballots rejected for technicalities saw a significant drop in last month’s primary election. That's after state officials tried anew to help voters avoid mistakes that might get their ballots thrown out. Pennsylvania’s top election official, Secretary of State Al Schmidt, said counties reported a 13.5% decrease in mail-in ballots that were rejected for reasons the state had tried to address with a redesigned ballot envelope and instructions for voting by mail. That's compared to the 2023 primary election. The success of the mail-in vote could be critical to determining the outcome of November’s presidential election in Pennsylvania.

Tornado emergencies have been called in Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa and more states over the past few weeks during recent periods of severe weather. Tornado emergencies differ from tornado watches and warnings. According to the National Weather Service, emergencies are far rarer and are issued when there's an imminent or ongoing severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage. Watches suggest tornadoes are possible and that people in the area should be prepared. Warnings mean a weather radar indicates a tornado is coming, or it’s been seen already, and people in the area need to act.

However, such operations often target the Pakistani Taliban, which are a separate group but a close ally of the Afghan Taliban who seized power in Afghanistan in 2021.
