(WBNG) - April 24, is National Wear Denim Day and calls on people to spread awareness about sexual assault prevention.

People are encouraged to wear jeans with a purpose, to support sexual assault survivors and educate them according to peaceoverviolence.org.

Wearing denim is also a symbol of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assaults.

“People wearing jeans not only show support to a specific survivor but underscore that there is never an excuse an invitation to rape.” Communications Director of the National Sexual Violence Resource Center Laura Palumbo.

Major New York landmarks are also being lit up teal today in support.

Victims of sexual assault are encouraged to call 1-800-656-4673
