ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) - The new superintendent for Rock Island-Milan is speaking out about a controversial new position being added in the district.

Sharon Williams was named as the new superintendent in January. Now, she’s asking the school board to create a deputy superintendent position.

That’s left teachers with concerns about the purpose and cost.

TV6 Investigates reached out to Williams about the position. Here’s her full statement:

“The Board of Education set ambitious goals for me as the incoming superintendent. These goals include leading the efforts to create a comprehensive short and long-term facilities management plan, improving scholar achievement and improving community and family relations. These goals have at their center - scholars and our desire to see them succeed and graduate from high school - prepared for their post-secondary lives.

The creation of a new supportive executive leadership role is happening to ensure that central office leaders, principals and teachers are well supported as these major goals are acted upon.”

The deputy position will pay up to $170,000 and is posted on the district website.
