Update: The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board lifted the precautionary boil water advisory for the Lower Coast of Algiers, specifically in the New Aurora neighborhood, where crews worked on a hydrant. Residents are asked to flush their faucets and empty their ice maker tray at least three times before using it, just to be safe.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for parts of Algiers due to a drop in water pressure on Saturday (April 13).

Residents are advised to boil tap water before drinking, cooking, or other uses. The advisory is a safety measure until tests confirm the water is safe.

Residents should not drink from the tap. Instead, they should use bottled or boiled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and mixing baby formula. The advisory also recommends washing fruits and vegetables with boiled or bottled water and making new ice with treated water.

Adults can bathe or shower in tap water for hygiene but should avoid swallowing it. Babies and young children should receive sponge baths or bathe with boiled water. Those with open wounds or weakened immune systems should also use boiled water for bathing. Hand sanitizer is recommended after washing hands with tap water.

For cleaning, use boiled water to wipe down surfaces like countertops and tables. Dishes should be washed by hand and then soaked in a one-gallon water solution with one teaspoon of bleach for one minute. Laundry can be done as usual.

Heat water safely until large bubbles rise from the bottom to the top, and continue boiling for at least one minute. Cool the water, store it in a clean container with a cover, and add a pinch of salt to improve taste if desired.

The board will notify the community when the tap water is safe to drink. If you experience low or no water pressure, contact 504-52-WATER (504-529-2837).
