Hundreds of family, friends, police and sheriff's deputies gathered in Castro Valley Friday to honor a fallen Oakland police officer.
Officer Jordan Wingate was remembered for his dedication and commitment to serving his community.
“Today we honor and remember Officer Jordan Tyler Wingate”, said Interim Oakland Police Department Chief Darren Allison, who was among those who spoke about the fallen officer.
“Jordan exemplified the distinct character and possessed the essential qualities and courage to do this job well. He was the kind of cop you wanted,” Allison said. The department, and the Oakland community were fortunate to have him as a police officer. He was one of the great ones, best of the best.”

On Saturday, Wingate succumbed to injuries suffered in a vehicle collision on Aug. 13, 2018, while responding to a suspicious person call at the Port of Oakland. He was surrounded by his family when he passed, according to a news release from the city.
“It doesn’t matter how much time passes, five days five months five years no amount of time can prepare you for the loss of a loved one especially the loss of your child,” Allison said.

Wingate’s father, Randy Wingate, is a retired Oakland police captain.
He choked back tears as he talked of his son's commitment to Oakland.
“In such a short period of time he truly created his own legacy. Jordan stood for something which is so uncommon in the world that we have today. Jordan just wanted to serve his community,” he said.
Randy also thanked those who have supported his family and shared his memories.
“I think the biggest thanks goes to Jordan. Thank you for being strong and living life to its fullest. Thank you for being a great son,” he said.
Others said they'd always remember the officer's warm smile, positive and respectful demeanor, and his enduring want to help others.
“Jordan protected our community and sought justice for victims harmed by criminal acts,” Allison said.
Jordan began his public service career as an oakland police cadet in 2013 and later was awarded “Rookie of the Year” by the Oakland police officers association.
“We love you and we miss you, we will never forget you. You can rest easy my friend we have the watch from here,” Allison said.
"Those who knew Officer Wingate described him as a hard worker who always had a smile on his face," wrote the city of Oakland in a press release. "Officer Wingate's dedication to duty and commitment to serving our community exemplified the highest ideals of law enforcement. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, the Oakland Police Department family, the city of Oakland, and the law enforcement community. Officer Wingate was a true hero who dedicated his life to making our community safer."
