BAD IDEA. IT TAKES ONE CONCERN AWAY. KATIE, THANK YOU. APRIL IS NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH AND A LOCAL ORGANIZATION SAYS THEY NEED MORE HELP TO GIVE MORE KIDS THEIR CHILDHOODS BACK. THE WARSAW BASED GUARDIANS OF THE CHILDREN SHOW ME MIDWEST CHAPTER RECENTLY PUT UP BLUE PINWHEELS ACROSS SEVERAL PARTS OF THE STATE TO REPRESENT EVERY CHILD WHO HAD BEEN KILLED IN MISSOURI THIS PAST YEAR. THE ORGANIZATION WORKS WITH COURTS AND FAMILIES TO HELP CHILDREN WHO HAVE BEEN ABUSED ACROSS MOST OF THE NORTHERN PARTS OF MISSOURI. FIRST OFF, WHEN WE ADOPT A CHILD INTO OUR ORGANIZATION THAT’S BEEN ABUSED, UM, THEY GET THEIR OWN VEST, THEY GET THEIR OWN, UH, ROAD NAME THAT THEY GET TO PICK OUT. THEY GET A TEDDY BEAR AND A CERTIFICATE, AND THEN WE TAKE THEM ON A MOTORCYCLE RIDE. AND AT THAT POINT, GENERALLY, I TELL WHOEVER THE GUARDIAN IS OF THAT CHILD, I SAID, JUST WATCH YOUR FACE WHEN THEY COME BACK, THAT YOU WON’T SEE A BIGGER GRIN. BUT THEY SAY THEIR ORGANIZATION IS STRETCHED THIN. THEY NEED MORE RIDERS. THEY NEED MORE SUPPORTERS AND MORE DONATIONS BECAUSE THEY ARE HELPING MORE AND MORE KIDS EVERY YEAR. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GET INVOLVED OR HELP OUT, YOU CAN CONNECT WITH THEM THROUGH THEIR FACEBOOK PAG

Guardians of the Children Show-Me Midwest needs more riders and supporters

The Guardians of the Children Show-Me Midwest Chapter is looking for new members to help kids across parts of Missouri. The nonprofit works with courts, schools and other groups to support children who have been victims of abuse. "When we adopt a child into our organization that's been a abused, they get their own vest, they get their own road name that they get to pick out, they get a teddy bear and a certificate," said John Vandergriff, the organization's treasurer and court liaison. "Then we take them on a motorcycle ride. And at that point, I tell the guardian of that child, watch their face when they come back. You won’t see a bigger grin."The group currently has 40 riders that cover most of the northern half of Missouri, but they are getting more requests to help kids across the state. They need more riders and more supporters. "We always want people who are dedicated," said Vandergriff. "A lot of our members are retired, but we have a lot that still work full-time, everything from over-the-road truckers to construction workers. The more members we have, the more children we can help."April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month, and the group recently rode to several communities, placing blue pinwheels to raise awareness. If you would like to help out, you can find out more on their website or on their Facebook page.
