Latest UK politics as Rwanda Bill set to become law after Lords back down

The Rwanda Bill is set to become law, after Lords agreed not to table any more amendments to the policy.

Earlier, MPs voted to reject peers’ remaining amendment.

MPs backed by 312 to 237, a majority of 74, a government motion to reject a requirement that the east African country could not be treated as safe unless an independent monitoring body deemed it to be so.

It means a continuation of the parliamentary tussle over the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill, known as ping-pong, with peers now set to reconvene in order to decide whether to insist on the amendment.

Earlier, Rishi Sunak told a press conference “enough is enough”, as he said MPs and peers would sit through the night if necessary to get the Bill through Parliament.

The first flight carrying asylum seekers to Rwanda will leave in 10-12 weeks, he claimed, promising that the scheme would be put into operation, “no ifs, no buts”.
