Update: Man on Syracuse West Side fatally shot himself, police say

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A man was fatally shot Tuesday night on Syracuse’s West Side, police said.

Around 7:14 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of Gifford Street after a 911 caller reported a man was shot, according to Kieran Coffey, a spokesperson for the Syracuse police.

When officers arrived, they found a 39-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the neck, Coffey said. The man was taken to Upstate University Hospital where he later died, he said.

The 911 caller was reportedly a child who told Onondaga County 911 Center dispatchers that his mother and father were arguing when the man was shot, according to dispatch reports.

Police have not said who shot the man. No arrests have been made in the shooting, Coffey said.

Police ask anyone with information to call the Syracuse Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at (315) 442-5222.
