SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Illinois State Fire Marshal gave $4 million to fire departments across the state on Friday.Â
The total was divided among 165 departments and EMS providers in Illinois. In our region, 24 departments received a portion of the money. Recipients were given up to $26,000 to purchase new equipment. The idea is that offices can use this money to buy smaller equipment not covered by fundraising efforts.
“We continue to see and hear about the need and understand the issues fire departments face when it comes to funding across the state," said Illinois State Fire Marshal James A. Rivera. "I am proud this year we were able to increase our grant funding to $4 million, a $2.5 million increase from last year, which has allowed us to award over 100 more departments money to purchase lifesaving tools they might not have been able to afford otherwise."
Most departments throughout Illinois managed to apply. Applicants must have joined in the National Fire Incident Reporting System for at least two years to qualify for the grants.Â
