Meet your new best friend this Saturday, April 20, during the annual Puppy Love concert at the Libbey Park fountain from noon to 2 p.m.
The free concert is hosted by the Ojai Valley Chamber of Commerce and The Voice Studio LA and supports the Ojai-based Humane Society of Ventura County.
Starring more than a dozen Ojai singers young and old, the concert program is produced by longtime Ojai resident, performer and vocal coach Asunta Fleming.
“The Humane Society is planning to bring at least four lovable dogs to be showcased during the concert. As each dog is brought up onto the stage, fun facts will be read about each dog,” said Jamie Fleming, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce and Asunta’s husband.
You can also visit with the dogs. “Last year, many of the dogs were adopted from this event, including the crowd’s favorite, Milo, who had been in the shelter for more than 400 days. Hopefully, there will be more happy endings this Saturday,” Fleming told the Ojai Valley News.
“The unfortunate part of his story is that he did spend those 400 days at the shelter. That’s way too long. We want to try to decrease the length of stay and get these dogs adopted as quick as we can,” said Steve McCurry, HSVC community development manager.
The Chamber of Commerce hosts two concerts a year to benefit the shelter. “We’ve been really successful. During the Puppy Love concert, people fall in love with the dog and follow us back to the shelter and adopt same-day,” McCurry said.
The annual Puppy Love concert supports HSVC’s dog adoption program, a countywide pet pantry program, humane education program and humane investigations program.
“With the weather that we’re expecting, the talent of the singers that Jamie’s wife brings together, and our puppy magic, it’s going to be a great concert,” McCurry said.
To celebrate its 92nd birthday, the Humane Society will hold its annual fundraising dinner on Saturday, June 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. Early-bird tickets for the dinner at the shelter, 402 Bryant St. in Ojai, are now on sale.
The Chamber of Commerce is inviting everyone attending the Puppy Love concert to bring their own dog. “Enjoy the music and the other dogs,” said Fleming. “What a great way to relax on a Saturday in downtown Ojai’s park.”
