(FOX40.COM) — Stockton Police will host a gun buyback event in late April to reduce gun violence and promote responsible firearm ownership.

The agency said it will hand out cash gift cards of $200 or $400 depending on the type of firearm turned in.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the parking lot located at 300 N. Harrison St.

People who turn in firearms will not be required to identify themselves and will remain anonymous, police said.

The firearms will need to be unloaded and placed in the trunk of their vehicle as they enter the lot. Police and staff will direct drivers on where to move their vehicle, and they will be required to stay inside them during the event.

Police said that gift cards will not be given for firearms that are non-operable, but these can still be turned in to be destroyed.
