Madonna still loves England
For those who thought her love affair with England was fading, Madonna set the record straight last night.
She said she was "delighted" to be living here, hailed Britons as "not rude and obnoxious like the Americans" and said she preferred English expletives to the U.S. version.
The 44-year-old singer said that when she first moved here she was not so sure, but then she "just really fell in love with it".
"I learned to drive on the wrong side of the road and I learned to love ale."
She had even learned to swear in English. "I think English swear words are more charming, more colourful," she said.
"I am delighted to be here. I am not delighted that people keep saying that I don't like being here.
"Why did I buy so many houses here if I didn't like it?"
Madonna, who was being filmed for tonight's Jonathan Ross show, said that among her favourite things were "pottering around" the house and riding her bike wearing one of her 30 tracksuits.
For a woman who built her image on supreme self-confidence, she made a remarkable confession, saying she did not always like what she saw in the mirror. "I'm a bit critical of myself right now," she said.
