BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) – “The True Beauty of Music is that it connects people” – a famous quote from American composer and musician Roy Ayres.

This idea also rings true for the students at St. Clairsville Schools, who say being involved in the band is a special experience they share – all thanks to their director.

7News Anchor Annalise Murphy had the pleasure of meeting April’s Golden Apple Awards winner, Mr. Justin Schwertfeger, who won $500 to use for his classroom.

“I’m grateful for St. Clair as well and it’s definitely a shock and surprise and I’m really excited.”

Justin Schwertfeger | Director of Bands, St. Clairsville Schools

For the last 14 years, Mr. Schwertfeger, whom everyone calls Mr. S, has worked as the Director of Bands for middle and high school students.

Mr. S has spent countless hours building the band by providing several programs like jazz, marching, percussion, and concert band to allude to all musical interests.

His award-winning bands are described as the “heart of St. Clairsville Schools.”

“His program has really branched out. It’s grown, provided new opportunities for all of our kids, reached out to kids who have different interests.”

Principal Justin Sleutz | St. Clairsville Schools

Students and faculty say Mr. S is kind, smart, passionate, and a true advocate for all students.

“He’s inspired a lot of people that want to create music and to have fun and do different things. he does an amazing job helping everybody and doing the great work that he does as a band director.”

Blake Higgins | 6th Grade, Percussion

The band motto, “Tradition, Excellence, Family,” is not just a motto. It’s a belief that each member takes seriously, creating an atmosphere of love and kindness for music and each other.

“I think if they have that, then that’s a win. And just to be good people, good citizens in life and always try to do the right thing.”

He says his favorite part of his job is seeing students start to understand music they may have been struggling with and that each day is different.

Mr. S is the first teacher from St. Clairsville Schools to be honored as a Golden Apple Awards Winner.

Congratulations from everyone here at WTRF.
