Here is where New Mexico ranks when it comes to the gender wage gap

New Mexico ranked No. 8 in the nation for the smallest wage gap between men and women in a report by MarketWatch Guides that analyzed U.S. Census data.

Nationwide, women entrepreneurs experienced growth in 2023. But women in the workforce still aren't on an even playing field with their male counterparts.

In New Mexico, women earn $0.83 for every dollar men make in the same role. Countrywide, women earn on average $0.82 for each dollar men make in the same roles, according to the report.

The report also found the gender pay gap to be more pronounced for people who have less than a high school education. Legal occupations have the largest wage gap out of all job categories in the analysis.

According to data from the U.S. Census 2022 American Community Survey, women in New Mexico make 14.49% less in individual earnings than men in the state. In Albuquerque, women earned 19.06% less than men when comparing median individual incomes.

For families, households headed by women with no spouse earned 22.1% less than family households headed by men with no spouse. Married-couple family households earned the highest median income and made up the largest percent of Albuquerque and New Mexico's households.

Women in Albuquerque occupy more positions in management, business, science, arts, service, sales and office occupations, while men occupy more natural resources, construction and maintenance, production, transportation and material moving occupations.
