A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy was driving to the scene of a report of lewd and lascivious activity in Pompano Beach Saturday morning when he hit the person the call was about, killing him, officials say.

The pedestrian was identified as Jamil Moreland, 28, of Fort Lauderdale. Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the crash.

The crash occurred just before 5:30 a.m. near the 1500 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to a media release.

Deputy Wyatt Jennesse, 24, was on duty driving westbound down the road in the left thru lane, on his way to respond to a call for service about a lewd and lascivious person near North Powerline Road, when he crashed into Moreland, who was either lying or crouched in the road.

Afterward, Jennesse stopped his car and reported the crash, according to the release.

Broward Sheriff’s Pompano Beach District deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded. There, they found Jennesse and Moreland, who paramedics pronounced dead at the scene. Jennesse was not injured.

Later, detectives confirmed that Moreland was the subject of the original lewd and lascivious report.

“According to investigators, driver impairment, excessive speed, and mechanical malfunction are not considered to be contributing factors in this crash at this time,” the release states.

Moreland’s brother declined to comment Saturday because of the active investigation.

Jennesse was hired by Broward Sheriff’s Office in February 2023.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are continuing to investigate the crash.
