Nine suspected migrants were found dead when fishermen spotted a boat adrift off the coast of northern Brazil, authorities said Tuesday, reducing an earlier death toll of 20.

The small boat was found Saturday off a remote beach near the town of Braganca, in the state of Para.

"Documents and objects found with the bodies indicate the victims were migrants from Africa, namely the region of Mauritania and Mali, though there may also have been people of other nationalities," federal police said in a statement.

A police spokesman had initially said the migrants were believed to be from Haiti, and put the death toll at 20.

But investigators later established there were eight bodies aboard the boat and another nearby, "in circumstances that suggest the victim belonged to the same group," police said.

Authorities are still investigating the victims' identities and the time and cause of death, they said.
