GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man is in the hospital after an officer-involved shooting in Glendale on Sunday afternoon.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. near 51st and Myrtle Avenues, which is north of Glendale Avenue.

Police say an employee at a business called 911 to report a robbery involving a 26-year-old man who was acting erratically and waving what seemed to be a handgun inside the store. The man eventually left the store, but police received additional calls about him continuing his behavior outside.

Police say an officer arrived on the scene, and that’s when the man allegedly pointed the handgun at the officer, and the officer fired multiple times.

The man was shot several times and was taken to the hospital. He is expected to survive. The man will be taken into custody after he is finished receiving treatment. Police did not say if a handgun was found at the scene.

“We’re very grateful this was not a situation where multiple people were injured in all of this, and we’re also grateful that the officer involved was uninjured as well that the suspect is in custody,” said Jose Santiago, Public Information Officer with the Glendale Police Department.

Glendale police say the officer involved has over a decade of experience. An investigation into the shooting is underway by the Surprise and Glendale Police Departments.

“When it comes to something like an officer-involved shooting, it’s basically an all-hands-on-deck situation,” said Santiago. “We want to make sure that not only is the scene secure, the suspect is taken into custody and that there is no further injury.”

The area near 51st Avenue will be closed for several hours from Glendale to Orangewood Avenues as police investigate. There is no estimated time of reopening.

This is the 21st officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County and the 33rd in the state so far in 2024.
