MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (WCCO) – Friends and family from all over the country came to Minnesota to celebrate the birthday of 90-year-old twins.

Jim and Jerry Myers said they grew up in the care of their grandmother after their mother died when they were young.

The brothers were then passed into the care of their Aunt Mary when they were 14 years old after their grandmother passed away.

The two were further split up from their family when their sister moved to Waseca, Minnesota.

The Myer brothers would graduate high school in 1953 and go on to surpass challenges throughout their lives.

Teresa Schantin is Jim Myer’s daughter. She said her father and uncle had an unusual childhood, but were fortunately surrounded by people who cared about them.

“You know, I think they’re a good example of resilience,” she said.

After working a number of jobs in different fields, the two brothers incorporated a Sheet Metal Connectors, where they would continue to work for 55 years.

Outside of their work lives, the brothers liked to fish.

“You can imagine the battle between … who caught the most and who got the biggest,” Jim Myers said.

Schantin said it is remarkable how alike the two brothers are to this day.

“There are some things from childhood that remain with them today,” she said. “But again, their resilience and their love for their families and the connectedness that they’ve always longed for I think they’ve created.”
