The KB5036980 update delivered on April 23, 2024, officially implemented advertising in the start menu, which had been tested in the preview version. According to Microsoft, 'New! The Recommended section of the Start menu displays some Microsoft Store apps. These apps come from a small set of curated developers. This will help you discover some of the great apps available to you.'

I actually applied the update to a PC with Windows 11 Pro, but at the time of writing, I was unable to see any ads.

Ad display can be turned off by going to 'Personalization' → 'Start' in the Settings app and turning off the toggle switch for 'Show me tips, shortcuts, new apps, and other suggestions.'

The first time ads were seen in the Windows 11 start menu was in March 2023. At this time, it was confirmed that Microsoft's file backup service was displayed in the notification bar.

By the way, recommended apps have been displayed in the start menu for some time in Windows 10. You can hide them by turning off the setting 'Sometimes show recommended apps in the start menu' in 'Settings', 'Personalization', and 'Start'.

KB5036980 is available as an option at the time of writing, but will be made standard for all users within the next few weeks.
