Just days before the Halifax County High School prom, area law enforcement agencies joined forces to make students aware of the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. South Boston Police Department, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program and Halifax Police Department visited Halifax County High School Thursday morning warning students about what can happen when a person gets behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or texts while driving. The demonstrations and warnings were part of the RISE program and TL3 Campaign.
According to Working in Support of Education (w!se), a leading New York City based educational not-for-profit, the fastest growing age group declaring bankruptcy is young adults, ages 19 to 25, and Halifax County High School is trying to combat that phenomenon. Their efforts to educate students on banking, checking, saving, debt and more has paid off once again. For the second year in a row, the high school has earned a spot in the “100 Best w!se High Schools teaching Personal Finance” rankings.
An eight-run second inning proved enough run support for a complete game effort from pitcher Sidney McLamb, and the Halifax County High School varsity softball team beat Person High School 8-3 at home Wednesday in the annual Cancer Awareness Game. The Comets scored eight runs off 11 hits in the second inning, including doubles from Kirsten Doss and McLamb, two singles from Gabby Spainhour (RBI), and singles from McLamb, Kye-Neisha Logan (two RBIs), Megan Watts, Megan Puckett (RBI), Taylor Barnes (RBI), Ashley Watts and Cecilie Elliott (RBI).

South Boston businessman John Cannon was elected chair of the Halifax Industrial Development Authority. Cannon and Halifax businessman Jack Dunavant were vying for the post formerly held by Carlyle Ramsey, who formally resigned. Cannon drew support from IDA board members Jack Slagle, Plarry McPeters and Gene Faucette while Dunavant drew support from Ramsey and Billy Royster.
Jacob Talley was the big winner in Monday’s 46th annual Halifax County Junior Livestock Show and Sale, held at the fairgrounds. Talley, sponsored by Spaulding Equipment, had his steer judged Grand Champion. Trey Reese, sponsored by Powell Funeral Home, had his steer judged Reserve Champion.
Don’t give in and don’t ever give up was the theme in the Comet varsity softball team’s nail-biting 3-2 win here over GW. The crucial victory over the arch-rival gave the Comets a 2-1 record in the Western Valley District and a 8-5 record overall on the season.

Paul H. Jones, who has served as the superintendent of the public school system in Henry County for the past 11 years, has been named the new superintendent for the Halifax County and South Boston public school system. Jones, who was the top choice among the members of the local school board’s selection committee, will begin his duties July 1.
The dedication of a new truck and building addition and presentation of numerous service awards will highlight the 20th anniversary celebration of the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department on Sunday.
The WDVA 200 NASCAR Winston Racing Series late model stock car race Saturday night at South Boston Speedway will feature many of the area’s top drivers including David Blankenship of Richmond who has proven to be a strong competitor in both of his two early season outings.
