THIS COMMISSION IS MADE UP OF MOTIVATED YOUNG PEOPLE WHO IDENTIFY AND ADVOCATE FOR ISSUES THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO CHILDREN AND TEENS IN THE COUNTY, AND ALEXANDRA RIDE WITH PLACER COUNTY HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES JOINS US NOW LIVE. SO LET’S START WITH MORE ON WHAT THIS COMMISSION DOES. HI. THANKS FOR LETTING ME BE HERE TONIGHT TO TALK ABOUT THE YOUTH COMMISSION. IAN. SO AS YOU SAID, IT IS A GROUP OF YOUTH. SO IT’S 21 YOUTH FROM ACROSS ALL OF PLACER COUNTY. SO THIS YEAR WE HAVE YOUTH ALL THE WAY FROM NORTH LAKE TAHOE, ALL THE WAY THROUGH OUR SOUTHMOST PART IN ROSEVILLE. AND THEY DO SPEND THE YEAR IDENTIFYING AND ADVOCATING FOR ISSUES THAT ARE AFFECTING AND IMPORTANT TO FOSTER COUNTY YOUTH, SPECIFICALLY, THEY WORK TOGETHER THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ON A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT YOUTH CHOSEN AND YOUTH LED PROJECTS. THIS YEAR, THE YOUTH COMMISSION IS FOCUSED ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION, MENTAL HEALTH AND FINANCIAL LITERACY AND TALK A LITTLE BIT, ALEXANDRA, ABOUT THE JUST THE IMPACT THAT THE COMMISSION HAS HAD ON THE COMMUNITY AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR ANYBODY WHO DECIDES TO BE PART OF THIS. YEAH, SO THE YOUTH COMMISSION GIVES YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE THE LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITY. SOMETIMES YOUTH FEEL LIKE THEY DON’T HAVE A VOICE OR THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY CAN DO TO BE ABLE TO HELP YOUTH THAT THEY SEE IN THEIR COMMUNITY, THEIR PEERS THAT THEY’RE HANGING OUT WITH EVERY DAY. AND THEY JUST WANT TO BE ABLE TO BE THOSE LEADERS IN THE COMMUNITY TO HELP MAKE THAT CHANGE. SO THIS IS A COMPLETELY YOUTH LED COMMITTEE OR COMMISSION, AND THROUGH THE YEARS THEY’VE WORKED ON MANY DIFFERENT THINGS. THEY’VE CREATED PSA’S FOR SCHOOL MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS. THEY HOLD AN ANNUAL FIVE K EVENT PROMOTING A HEALTHY BODY AND A HEALTHY MIND. SO EVERYONE COME OUT SATURDAY FOR OUR FOURTH ANNUAL FIVE K. AND THEN THE YOUTH COMMISSIONERS ALSO GAIN LIFELONG SKILLS THAT HELP THEM TO BE LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITY, AND IT ALSO EMPOWERS THEM TO TAKE OWNERSHIP IN THEIR FUTURE. THAT CONTINUES TO CONTRIBUTE POSITIVELY TO THEIR COMMUNITY. SO IT JUST GIVES THEM THAT OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THAT VOICE AND TO MAKE THE CHANGES THEY FEEL THAT YOUTH IN THEIR COMMUNITY ARE ASKING FOR. WELL, YOU MENTIONED LEADERSHIP THERE WHO WOULD MAKE A GOOD APPLICANT FOR THIS? ANY HIGH SCHOOL AGED YOUTH. SO ANYONE 14 TO 18 YEARS OLD THAT IS A RESIDENT OF PLACER COUNTY, ATTENDING HIGH SCHOOL AND WANTS TO HELP MAKE CHANGE IN THE COMMUNITY, HAVE SOME FUN AND MEET AMAZING NEW PEOPLE SHOULD ABSOLUTELY APPLY FOR THE PLACER COUNTY YOUTH COMMISSION. THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ANY YOUTH THAT HAS A DESIRE TO MAKE THESE CHANGES IN THEIR COMMUNITY, AND TO EVEN LEARN A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THEIR COUNTY AND HOW IT WORKS. ALL RIGHT. WELL, IT IS DEFINITELY A GREAT STARTING PLACE TO LEARN
