Warren mom’s charges amended in 19-month-old son’s overdose death

WARREN — A Warren woman charged in the death of her child after he ingested her prescription methadone had her charges amended Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Aris J. Rice, 32, of Feederle Drive SE, Warren, pleaded guilty Tuesday before Judge Andrew D. Logan. Rice admitted to an amended indictment, which included charges of third-degree involuntary manslaughter and a first-degree misdemeanor of endangering children.

The case stemmed from the death of Rice’s 19-month-old son in September. The child suffered methadone intoxication, cardiac arrest and an anoxic brain injury, ultimately leading to his death at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Rice’s sentencing will occur following a background investigation conducted by county probation officers. She remains free on bond pending the scheduling of her sentencing.

She faces a potential maximum prison term of three years. Assistant Prosecutor Diane Barber stated that the state intends to seek some form of confinement during sentencing.

A Warren police report detailed the initial response to a call regarding an unresponsive child at Rice’s residence. Upon arrival, officers and EMTs found the toddler not breathing, prompting immediate life-saving efforts.

The child died Oct. 1, and a subsequent investigation revealed the presence of methadone in his system, as indicated by a lab report from hospital staff.

Rice was set for a June 10 jury trial.
