Clock ticking for Mississippi lawmakers to make a move on Medicaid

Legislative session expected to end May 5

MISSISSIPPI LEGISLATORS ARE STILL AT AN IMPASSE OVER EXPANDING "MEDICAID". IT'S LED TO MANY RALLIES AT THE STATE CAPITOL. <SEN. DERRICK SIMMONS/(D) GREENVILLE: FULL. MEDICAID. EXPANSION. NOW!> THE SENATE IS HOLDING FIRM ON THEIR PLAN THAT WOULD ADD ABOUT 40-THOUSAND PEOPLE TO THE "MEDICAID" ROLLS AS LONG AS THEY CAN PROVE THEY WORK AT LEAST 30-HOURS A WEEK. THE HOUSE PASSED A VERSION THAT WOULD BRING AROUND 200- THOUSAND WORKING POOR INTO THE FOLD. EACH SIDE HAS APPOINTED CONFERENCE COMMITTEE MEMBERS TO TRY AND SEE IF A COMPROMISE IS POSSIBLE BEFORE THE SESSION ENDS MAY 5TH. <SEN. BRICE WIGGINS/R- PASCAGOULA:THOSE THINGS ARE GOING TO START BEING TALKED BAOUT I KNOW THE LEADERSHIP ON BOTH SIDES ARE TRYING TO MOVE THINGS UP TO GET A DEAL. I WILL SAY THIS THAT IT HAS BEEN THE SENATE POSITION WHAT WE CALL A FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE WHAT SOME HAVE CALLED A CONSERVATIVE BILL AND WE ARE GOING TO MAINTAIN THAT. <SEN. ROBERT JOHNSON/(D) NATCHEZ: WE ARE AT A POINT NOW WHERE EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE FIRM IN OUR POSITIONS IT'S LIKE BEING IN A COURTROOM THE HOUSE NEEDS TO MAKE THEIR BEST ARGUMENTS AND STAY STEADFAST AND TAKE CARE OF AS MANY AS WE CAN IN EXPANSION.

Legislative session expected to end May 5

The legislative session is scheduled to come to an end in two weeks, so the clock is ticking on whether lawmakers will agree to a deal to expand Medicaid. Right now, each chamber has a different vision of what expansion would look like for Mississippi. The Senate and House have appointed members to a conference committee to try to hammer out a deal. The original plan from the House was more generous, offering expansion to nearly 200,000 working poor Mississippians. The Senate’s version was more restrictive, only covering an estimated 40,000 people who would need to prove they’re working at least 30 hours a week.
