ITV's flagship streaming service ITVX is having a barnstorming year, but if you're annoyed by all the ads, did you know that there's a way to avoid them for a small cost?

Ever since replacing the old ITV Hub service in late 2022, ITVX has been available in two different tiers – Free and Premium.

For those who don't want to pay a penny, ITV has its new content, old shows and ITVX exclusives all streaming for free – just with regular advert breaks within the episodes.

ITVX Premium allows fans to stream ad-free (with some exceptions) in return for a monthly or yearly subscription.

The good news is that you can also try it out for free to decide whether it's worth it, with no obligations.

Sign up for an ITVX Premium free trial

ITVX Premium free trials are available on the streaming service's official website.

When you sign up, there's an option to 'Start Your Free Trial' and try out the service for free for seven days.

Free trials are available to new subscribers only, so if you've registered for one before, you won't see this option available when you sign up.

You can cancel your subscription at any time before the end of the trial. If you don't do this, though, you'll be enrolled onto a recurring payment plan for continued use of the service.

ITVX Premium - how much does it cost?

ITVX Premium is available as either a monthly or annual recurring contract.

Monthly subscribers pay £5.99 a month, while annual subscribers pay £59.99 for a year.

The annual option is better value for money, working out as £11.89 cheaper (or 12 months for the price of 10) for a year's subscription compared to 12 months of monthly £5.99 payments.

Of course, the monthly option provides more flexibility, as you may decide to only stay subscribed when a favourite show is running, such as Britain's Got Talent, Love Island, Big Brother or I'm A Celebrity.

It's also a useful option whenever a hit drama is running, given that ITV's usual strategy is to drop many of its biggest shows as box sets once the first episode has aired.

This year, we've seen Mr Bates vs. the Post Office get streamed over 22 million times, while other dramas like After the Flood and Trigger Point also became huge hits with streaming audiences when episodes were made available for streaming before their linear transmission.

More recently, thriller series Red Eye is getting the box-set treatment on ITVX while still airing on ITV1 on Sunday evenings.

An all-year-round option may be a better option if you know that you're a regular viewer of various ITV dramas throughout the year, or want to catch up on ongoing soaps like Coronation Street and Emmerdale without the ad breaks.

ITVX Premium - what are the benefits?

ITVX Premium allows viewers to watch most of the service's shows and movies on demand without the adverts.

There are some exceptions to this, with ITV stating in the small print that "ad-free" applies to the service's on-demand library only.

A small number of programmes may contain ITV promotions where contractually required. ITV's own FAQ names Family Guy, Hart of Dixie and One Tree Hill as examples of shows that will still include adverts even with a Premium subscription, but these are very much the exception.

Of course, there'll also still be ads if you're using ITVX Premium to watch live ITV channels.

On the Premium tier, there's also the option to download programmes onto your mobile device or tablet to watch on the go.

In addition, there are hundreds more films and shows which are only available on ITVX Premium.

The subscription includes the entire BritBox catalogue, which includes content from the BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5 as well as ITV.

There are also iconic films and series from StudioCanal Presents.

Extras currently available include Stephen Fry drama Kingdom, crime drama DCI Banks, all six series of Downton Abbey, Philip Glenister and John Simm's Prey, guilty pleasure Hotel Babylon and Jimmy McGovern's classic '90s drama The Lakes.

For film fans, there's everything from 2022's adaptation of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile, family favourites like Paddington and Paddington 2, and classic movies like Basic Instinct and King Kong.

ITVX Premium - how to cancel

ITVX Premium subscribers can cancel their recurring subscription via the official ITVX website.

Once on the site, make sure you're signed in and then head to the 'Manage Account' section.

From there, click on 'Manage payment details' and click 'cancel your subscription'.

If you signed up via other devices, a full guide to how to cancel can be found on the ITVX website.
